[00:00:00] Hey Sheridan, I use a lot of different modalities, so I don’t know how to blend them and pick a niche. Today, we’re going to answer this question. By the end of the episode, you will know the hidden key signs that you’re looking at niching through a dysregulated nervous system. My personal story of niching and how healing trauma gave me the confidence, clarity and creativity to find a very purposeful, profitable and exciting and beautiful niche job within this work, how to work within your limitations, boundaries and things that give you the ick to save time and Energy.

[00:00:50] Getting right into it, here are some of the signs that you are looking at the idea of niching, of picking one person and one problem to solve through

[00:01:00] a dysregulated nervous system. You guys remember in episode 39, 241, I go through each of these different regulate, dysregulated nervous system states and how to know if you’re operating from them inside of your business in depth.

[00:01:15] Thank you to Sam who popped through this question on Instagram. So you’ll know that you’re looking through niching through a dysregulated nervous system if you tend to, if you were in a fight mode, if you tend more towards fight tendencies, you might be the person that criticizes other people a lot.

[00:01:39] About oh, this person said that niching has to happen. Um, and this person didn’t and If you go in like you cut you can be kind of mean a little bit sometimes Let’s just call it for what it is You kind of go and say oh like but then did you see that she wrote this and the way that she spoke about this isn’t congruent with that and This should

[00:02:00] be more nuanced like you can criticize other people and you might even talk to your friends about this and kind of criticize these people together Um, on the other hand of that, you might tend to criticize yourself.

[00:02:13] Ugh, if only I could get this right, if I X, Y, Zed that, if I had studied more, if I had chosen something else, um, yeah, like, I should be able to know this now. Something like that. You see, and the thing about self criticism is that it’s often kind of like this underlying track that’s playing inside of our mind that sometimes can be a little bit hard to Identify, but what will tell us that we’re probably being more critical to ourselves than is helpful is that we’ll feel a lot of tension in our body.

[00:02:50] Our body will kind of tense up because it’s in, if it is physiologically, it’s tensing to prepare to, to fight. Um, just so happens that [00:03:00] you’re finding yourself with your thoughts. It doesn’t feel very nice in a flight. Disregulated nervous system response. It’s, it’s like you’re running away and it’s a scattered energy.

[00:03:12] It’s like, Oh my God, I feel so overwhelmed. I have so many different ideas. I don’t know what to do. I have like post it note over here and post it note over there and Google knock there and like, it’s a lot of scattered energy. It’s a lot of overwhelm. It’s just feeling like it’s too much. And then usually avoiding running away.

[00:03:29] Uh, and this can be represented in quite literally just not. not logging on to do your work. Um, but maybe thinking about it a lot. It might not be in action but being in a lot of thought. It might be doing a lot of different like free trainings on niching or reading a lot of different books or just like filling yourself with information but not taking action and testing that niche for a couple of months or having conversations.[00:04:00]

[00:04:00] Um. It’s this energy that can be quite anxious and quite fearful based. And once again, this one’s a little bit. sometimes to recognize because we’ll just say like, Oh, I feel the anxious or I’m nervous about, or I’m worried about. And it’s almost normalized inside of our society to be in this overwhelmed space.

[00:04:21] Oh my God. There’s just so many things going on. And I’m just running from one thing to another. Um, but at the same as the other as fight. You’ll notice that there’s an underlying tension inside of your body. So you’ll feel really tired at the end of the day. Maybe you get some headaches. Maybe you, you, um, you, uh, what am I saying with your jaw?

[00:04:39] Like you, you bite your teeth, you grind your teeth and it hurts your jaw. Um, kind of frown a little bit. Uh, maybe you get really bad period pain because you’ve been in this state all month. Then we have freeze. Um, freeze is more of the energy of you just kind of do nothing.

[00:05:00] Like. You just kind of collapse into immobilization, um, just, uh, it’s just, I can’t move forward.

[00:05:08] And so, it’s kind of like procrast it’s procrastination, um, but particularly on the things that are most important. So you still might be busy with other things, but you’re procrastinating the, the actual items, the niching items, the picking of a niche. You procrastinate the decision, you procrastinate actually having the conversations of building the program around it, of doing the marketing.

[00:05:32] A lot of people that I know who tend to freeze response will be really active for a couple of weeks and then they will just kind of go and want to move into a hole and say, um, I’m just going to take a little bit of time off, um, and then I’ll come back to it. This is a sign that you’re probably in a freeze response, or you’ll do something like, I’m just going to post content for a couple of months and then I’ll pick a niche.

[00:05:58] Like it’s fine, [00:06:00] but you’re focusing your energy on creating this content without purpose, without intentionality and without structure. It’s gonna, it’s possibly a way that you’re procrastinating. Then we have Fawn. So freeze and form are a part of the immobilization nervous system response, but Fawn is a little bit different to freeze.

[00:06:22] And it’s more that you do this thing where you appease, you people please. So it’s like, I just do the thing that I think that I should do, or I’ll just keep doing heaps of market research and looking at what other people want and just picking their ideas instead of asking myself what I really, really want.

[00:06:38] To do a couple of key components of all of these different dysregulated nervous system states that directly affect our ability to pick a niche that we’re in love with and that is profitable is self doubt, lack of creativity, and a lot of brain fog. Cause a lot being, not being like, there’s like a lot of [00:07:00] activity in your head, or you just can’t find the things in your head.

[00:07:04] So. There is one common thread that is running through all of your work that is going to lead you through to that niche, right? You have, um, if you, if you have a lot of different modalities, there is, there is a common thread that’s running through them that directly lines up with a problem. That somebody that you really want to serve is experiencing.

[00:07:28] Now what happens is that when we have a dysregulated space, we’re not accessing the creativity and the clarity and the perspective and the bird’s eye thinking that it’s necessary to find this common thread and to find the profitable offer and to find the thing that You’re excited to show up for every single day.

[00:07:53] This was the case for me when I started My niching journey. So for some of you [00:08:00] who don’t know yet, I was a yoga therapist for quite a few years and then I went online and I found myself being able to help people with a lot of different things.

[00:08:11] Um, and I had a lot of different ideas, right? I would kind of sit down and I would stare at all of these ideas. So mine was almost like this combination of a flat response and a foreign response. So I would have all of these ideas and I would do all of these changing. There were so many things. Um, and it was just so much.

[00:08:30] And then I would open the document and I would just be filled with brain fog. And I would just open Instagram instead and scroll for another 15 minutes. And I would like tell myself that I was being productive. But months later, I was still doing. Um, you know, and I think my work was always been very successful, but it was just, I was not where I needed to be.

[00:08:51] Um, and then I would go into this frustration responses, this fight response. I would be so critical of how other people were doing it.

[00:09:00] And I would think, Oh, if I can just judge them enough, then somehow that will get me to my dreams. I had this weird underlying. Process that judging other people was a good way of spending my time.

[00:09:10] I spent a lot of time talking with friends as well, instead of about my ideas, instead of actually working on them and sharing with the world. And then I would get annoyed that I had so many ideas and that I wasn’t moving forward. And I would see certain things that other people were doing. And I would say, I don’t want to do that, but I would just bitch about it.

[00:09:30] Um, instead of just not doing moving forward and actually focusing on what I wanted to do. And when I did start making, when I did kind of start making some more moves and I put this, I put the, the actions that I talk, honestly, I took, I attribute them to the fact that I did a lot of deep trauma healing around being perceived, um, around what other people, might think of

[00:10:00] me, which is ironic considering what I’m about to say, but I think it reaffirms how these is a, this is a layered process.

[00:10:06] This is a step by step process. This isn’t a, you know, a quantum leap, although it is a quantum leap, but that’s a conversation for a different time. But I did a lot of work around, okay, one more one, how do I love myself? And. Am I worthy and deserving of love? And I healed a lot of inner child stuff around being perceived.

[00:10:29] And then, so I would start making action, taking action and I start niching and it was great. Got an audience. Good. Got some really awesome opportunities came in. That was amazing. Cool. And I would do this thing and I would just people please the audience. I had these people in front of me and I would just say what I thought that they wanted me to say.

[00:10:48] And I would just ask them what they wanted me to post about. And I just. It’s basically just was like, Hey guys, you know, what do you want? And I’ll create it. And I went into service mode, [00:11:00] which on one hand is very beautiful and I recommend it. But this wasn’t service mode out of overflow. This was service mode out of, I’m kind of scared that if I do quote unquote, the wrong thing, all of this is going to fall apart.

[00:11:16] So I was doing a lot of serving. I was creating a lot of content. I didn’t necessarily feel like the content was just overflowing from my wisdom. Um, it felt like a bit of a struggle and I would spend a lot of time hoping and trying to get things right. Um, and I was taking steps forward, which was amazing, but I was spending a lot of time in my head and it didn’t really feel like I was doing anything.

[00:11:44] Quite moving in a way that felt aligned with like my desires, to be honest, it felt like I should be moving quicker and I, and that was that feeling of, I should be moving quicker. It wasn’t in a limiting belief at that point. It was an [00:12:00] identification of no, there is something that’s going on inside that is stopping me from moving as quick as I could, or as I desire as is available to me.

[00:12:11] Um, so during that time I focus a lot on nervous system regulation using a basically a conversation with my body and looking at what am I putting into my nervous system and how is it responding to that and conversing with my body to understand nervous system regulation beyond just like do this type of breath practice.

[00:12:31] Although those things are really good and I do provide them to all my clients. It was a little bit deeper, a little bit more in communion with my body. And so because I was focusing so much on nervous system regulation, naturally, and same time I’m doing all of this trauma healing, naturally, what started to happen was I was starting to look at my business ideas with a level of creativity and intuition that I just didn’t have access to before.

[00:12:57] And so when I would have these

[00:13:00] conversations, uh, you know, at this point, I’m asking people for, for like, I’m having conversations about what do you want? How can I help you? Et cetera. I started to see that they needed help with something. And when I was in my client calls, I started to see kind of underlying threats.

[00:13:17] At this point I was serving numerous different clients. I still had some of my old just yoga clients. I had relationship anxiety clients. I had OCD clients. I had normal relationship, like relationship advice clients. I had money clients. I had clients who were working on their hair loss, their self image.

[00:13:34] I had clients who were working just on their confidence. And I had clients who. We’re starting to reach out to me for business support. And so I had all of these different clients from all of these different walks of life. And I was able to kind of begin seeing this common thread and simultaneously with this, I started to become more magnetic and I started to receive more invitations to help, but not in a way that it was like, how can you come serve me and I’ll [00:14:00] people please.

[00:14:00] And I have almost this codependent relationship with them. It was a true recognition. Now, Um, if you guys are into human design, I’m a projector and we really thrive off of recognition. And so what I was able to do was see how people recognize really my skillset. And then I was able to begin serving from overflow.

[00:14:24] I I started to then develop certain desires and limitations and needs around boundaries around time so that I had time for emotional processing. You know, I was still really in the depth of my complex PTSD. I had certain needs around privacy. I had, I’m a very, a very, very strong values and I’m very, very particular about those things.

[00:14:46] And so I had some very, very strong. Boundaries that I wanted to start putting around acting within my values inside of my business, things I wanted to do versus thing that I didn’t want to do. And these things before looked like

[00:15:00] limitations or reasons why I couldn’t have what I wanted. But when I started looking at it with a more regulated nervous system, without all of the gunk inside of my mind, uh, cleared up, I was actually able to create an offer.

[00:15:12] You’ve probably heard about it called body based business, which. Then propelled, I had a, I’ve had a full term, like a complete client roster for almost two years. No sales page. Cause I didn’t want to make one for this. There’s been no stress and complications. Um, it’s been, it’s been easy. You know, people are like, I don’t know if it can be this easy.

[00:15:34] Well, you know what? It actually can. Um, I’ve really enjoyed selling body based business and the product has evolved with its clients. It’s wonderful. And. Um, what’s happened is that it’s helped it’s come because I’ve seen the thread of my background in yoga therapy, my background as an entrepreneur, my background in trauma therapy and Ayurveda.

[00:15:57] Um, I decided that I wasn’t going to do anything that drains me. [00:16:00] I worked on the deep nervous system regulation that was stopping me from seeing how to get this out there. Um, on the trauma that was stopping me from being able to take consistent action. And I was able to position this. And look at, okay, what do people actually need?

[00:16:17] What are they excited to work on with me? Where do they recognize my skills? And then how do I want to get that out there and make it really, really easy for them to pay me? And you can learn this too. You can find and settle into this niche that honors your uniqueness, that aligns with your unique skills, and that is going to best be able to help people where they’re at.
